All You Need To Know About Garage Doors
Typically, your garage door isn’t generally a very prominent part of your home. What research confirms though, is that people have always subconsciously noticed the state and style of one’s door, and because of that have made some sort of judgment from the beginning. We’ve compiled a history of the garage door in the interest of educating our customers on the piece of machinery means so much to us.
In The Beginning….
Here’s where it started: way back in “the old days” there were a group of people that enjoyed bringing large crowds of people to a coliseum to watch what we now call “The Olympic Games” which began in 776 BC. (You didn’t think we were talking about the 1980’s when we said ‘The old days’ did you?)
Since Chariots were an important part of those games, it is likely that many of the structures we’ve uncovered were used to store them. However, no definite proof of storage use exists until 450 BCv where unused chariots were stored in Jerusalem during peace time. The official definition of a garage door is “A building or shed for housing a motor vehicle or vehicles,” and we feel like a chariot is a vehicle just like anything else. However, the phrase ‘garage’ and ‘garage door’ didn’t come about till sometime later. And there were no mentions of the word in any literature or common vernacular until the beginning of the 1900’s.
As early as 1902, American manufacturers were releasing catalogues featuring what they called a “float over door.” Early prototypes. 4 years later, the garage door prototype began to gain speed and the development of the door progressed from there.
Your garage door works on a system of a torsion spring counterbalance system. This system consist of one or two tightly wound up springs attached to a steel shaft with cable drums at both ends. The entire apparatus is mounted up on a system that leans on the header wall above the garage door frame.
This spring and torsion counterbalance system can be counted on for at least 7 years. However, the presence of glass or added insulation can put a strain on the door that may cause that number to be lower. Be sure to check with your garage door capabilities before installing any extra features to your door.
With the help of professional garage door servicemen, your garage door is a work of art and years of investment into its development. It’s nothing to be taken lightly, we promise you.
